For a while I’ve been meaning to take out my sewing machine and finally learn how to use it…well… that day has come! I sewed my first skirt. Originally this started out as a maxi skirt but Brendan and I figured it was TOO much gold (as if there is even such a thing haha) Keep reading to see more photos of this outfit and shopping ideas inspired by this look <3
While visiting the local fabric store, I was in search of stretchy and flowy jersey knit fabrics to wear with the warm weather, till I stumbled upon the costume fabric aisle, and there it was… shiny gold. I figured why not, picked up a bit of it as well as some seersucker blue and white and some other crazy metallic that I’m hoping to create something with soon. One restless evening later of sewing, cutting, sewing, more cutting and well… I cut off a whole lot of fabric… now I have a cutesy and extremely shiny skirt.
Despite its metallic and stiff appearance, its more like a lurex or soft fabric that has a lot of movement. Its great, in person it almost looks like liquid gold!
The struggle after creating this fantastic and bold piece was figuring out what to wear with it. Here’s what I put together in this outfit:
- Denim button up (American Eagle)
- Winged antique gold collar necklace (F21)
- Black tutu skirt (American Apparel)
- Bonny Harness Ankle boots (All Saints)
It’s actually a pretty simple outfit all put together. The boldness of the skirt definitely allows for everything else to be super minimal, which is nice. Honestly I probably could have gone without the necklace but what fun is an outfit without at least one piece of jewelry 😉
I can’t wait to make more things now that I’ve figured out how to correctly and efficiently use my sewing machine haha. Super excited!!!!
